As the Zoo is within Queen's Park, opened as a Botanic Park in 1890 you will discover a thriving mix of indigenous and exotic vegetation.

This page will soon be updated with details on some of our most prized assets (the Gingko tree, Moreton Bay Figs, Umtiza Listerana, Camphor Trees, to name but a few), our cycads, bromeliads and tree orchids.

Friends of the East London Zoo have introduced a compost heap to recycle and re-use all organic waste within the zoo.

The EL Bromeliad Society have planted and maintain a small section of zoo near the Kiosk. Here you will find the following Bromeliad genera:

Aechmea
Billbergia
Canistropsis
Hohenbergia
Neoregelia
Nidularium
Portea
Quesnelia
Vriesea
